For as long as there have been cars, there has been drunk driving. Over the last several decades, Louisiana law enforcement agencies and nonprofit organizations have attempted to curtail the frequency with which individuals drive while intoxicated. Despite their efforts, drunk driving remains a significant problem in our state and across our country.

The statistics surrounding drunk driving are startling. For example, one study found that nearly a third of all fatal car accidents involve an intoxicated driver. Also, approximately two-thirds of people will be involved in some sort of drunk driving accident in their lifetimes. More than 29 million people in the U.S. admitted to drinking and driving in 2012, which is more people than live in the state of Texas.

Alcohol is a depressant It slows nervous system functioning, reduces the ability to process information and diminishes hand-eye coordination. Those who are under the influence of alcohol may have compromised judgment, poor concentration, and slowed reaction time. These reduced abilities increase the likelihood of a car accident.

Even though driving under the influence has been criminalized, many still choose to do it, often resulting in serious injuries and death. Those who are injured in a drunk driving accident often suffer devastating losses, including medical expenses and lost wages. Pain and suffering can take a toll, too. These victims may be able to take legal action which could lead to the imposition of liability and the recovery of compensation. Those who wish to learn more about their legal rights and how best to act on them may want to consider speaking with a legal professional.
