As a Louisiana motorist, you may feel frustrated when trying to navigate the roadways, especially if you are late to an appointment, rushing to work or trying to get home. If you have ever lost your temper while behind the wheel, you are not alone. Approximately 80% of adult American drivers say they experienced road rage one or more times within the last year, according to AAA. Yet, these aggressive driving behaviors can be extremely dangerous and may cause car accidents, injuries and death.

At least 56% of deadly accidents across the country involve some type of aggressive driving behavior. Fortunately, you can minimize your risk of becoming involved in an accident by knowing how to identify the signs of road rage.

Be on the lookout for the following driving behaviors as you share the road with other drivers:

  • Speeding or racing other cars
  • Following too closely
  • Weaving in and out of traffic lanes
  • Failing to obey traffic signs or signals
  • Excessive horn honking, yelling expletives or gesturing obscenely
  • Pulling out in front of other drivers

In some cases, you may be confronted by aggressive drivers who have decided to leave their vehicle. Angry drivers may use their vehicles to bump into other cars or run them off the road.

Although you may feel tempted to interact or compete with an aggressive driver, it is critical that you avoid becoming involved. Instead, safety experts recommend that you call and alert law enforcement to the matter at hand. An officer may be able to take care of the issue before an accident occurs.
