Can you imagine a world where traffic deaths simply didn’t happen? Recently, the U.S. government set a goal to achieve just that within the next three decades.

The U.S. Department of Transportation released a plan to promote the widespread use of seat belts and rumble strips, and to reduce the prevalence of distracted and drunken driving in order to achieve this goal.

According to the DOT, the introduction of advanced technologies will also help make it feasible to eliminate traffic deaths and fatalities in the future.

The widespread use of fully autonomous vehicles could eliminate human error, which plays a role in about 95 percent of all traffic accidents, according to the DOT.

The Obama administration and DOT came up with the plan after a 7.2 percent rise in the number of traffic deaths last year.

The National Safety Council released preliminary estimates for the first half of this year and the estimates show that fatalities are up 9 percent so far this year in comparison to the first half of 2015.
