Collecting accident data takes time. Because of this, statistics often lag a year or two behind. However, by looking at these statistics, an individual can see trends and obtain a clear sense of the commonality of certain types of accidents. Unfortunately, truck accidents are still far too common, leaving a significant number of victims and their families utterly devastated.

According to data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, nearly 4,000 semi-trucks and busses were involved in fatal accidents in 2014. There were an additional 88,000 trucks involved in injurious accidents, which was a 21 percent increase over 2013’s numbers. In total, 2014 saw approximately 411,000 truck accidents, with 20 percent of them resulting in injury.

The FMCSA’s data also helps illustrate when and where truck accidents occur. For example, more than 60 percent of all fatal truck accidents occurred on rural roads. Also, more than 80 percent of all truck accidents take place during the traditional work week of Monday through Friday.

These statistics highlight just how common and dangerous truck accidents can be. Unsuspecting motorists can be taken by surprise by a negligent trucker, resulting in devastating harm. Victims can be left with extensive physical, emotional and financial damages that can take years to recover from, if recovery is even possible.

Fortunately, truck crash victims and their families may be able to recover compensation for their damages by pursuing a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit. Success on such a claim will depend on the facts at hand and the plaintiff’s ability to make persuasive legal arguments, but they always have the option to secure the assistance of a qualified legal professional who can help them develop the strongest clam possible.
